Arts Council England (ACE) has awarded £30,000 to Birmingham Museums Trust to initiate the Civic Museums Leadership Network.

The funding, which is for 2015-16, “is to create support networks for senior professionals from local authority cultural trusts, to help encourage the sharing of skills, knowledge and best practice in the museums and libraries sector”, said an ACE spokeswoman.

“We want to support leaders in these sectors to create their own strategies for developing thriving contemporary civic museums in the current economic climate.”

The funding comes from ACE’s managed funds, which are designed to “establish new partnerships and address particular ambitions for growth” and are not normally open to application. Including library professionals in the network is an option but not a stipulation of the funding, she added.

Over 30 local authority and former-local authority museums across England have expressed an interest in joining the network. Birmingham Museums Trust has appointed David Bryan from consultancy firm Xtend to facilitate the network and establish a steering group to take it forward.

The network is to have its first formal meeting in February.

The network will be the subject of a news analysis in the next issue of Museums Journal, out in print and online on 1 February.
