Museums shortlisted for family friendly award
The Cardiff Story and the Dylan Thomas Centre among 10 museums shortlisted by Kids in Museums
Ten museums have been shortlisted for the Family Friendly Museum Award 2017.
More than 700 institutions were nominated for the award, which is run by the charity Kids in Museums. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London in October.
On this year’s shortlist are: the Cardiff Story; the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea; the Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle upon Tyne; Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry; the Jewish Museum, London; the People’s History Museum, Manchester; Rainham Hall, London; River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames; Tudor House, Worcester; and Vale and Downland Museum, Oxfordshire.
The shortlisted museums will be road-tested anonymously by families to determine how well they perform against the family-friendly criteria outlined in the Kids in Museums manifesto.
John Glen, the parliamentary under secretary for arts, heritage and tourism, said: “Making our museums fun and interesting for young people can help spark a lifelong interest in arts, culture and history.”
In a statement published on the Dylan Thomas Centre’s website, Jo Furber, the literature officer at Swansea Council, said: “It’s a real endorsement of the effort we put into creating a welcoming family-friendly environment at the centre.
“There’s lots going on this summer too with more than 50 different events and activities planned for children, young people and families.”
