The Art Fund has revealed the 10 organisations in the running to win the £100,0000 Museum of the Year prize 2013.

The Hepworth Wakefield is the only new build museum shortlisted for the award, which was rebranded at the end of last year and is now open to any Accredited museum or gallery. Previously, it only recognised new projects or redeveloped museums from the past 12 months.

Five redeveloped museums have been shortlisted for 2013, including the Beaney in Canterbury; the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London; the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge; Preston Park Museum and Grounds in Stockton-on-Tees; and the William Morris Gallery in London.

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead has been nominated for Baltic 39, a cultural hub with artist studios, exhibitions and events, while Narberth Museum in Pembrokeshire, is recognised for its work to re-establish itself as a volunteer-run museum following its closure in 2003.

Finally, the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow have also been shortlisted for the 2013 award.

All the finalists are also shortlisted for the Clore Award for Learning, which recognises achievements in learning programmes for children and young people.

Stephen Deuchar, director of the Art Fund, said: “The quality and diversity of the UK’s museums and galleries is truly exceptional and the job of this prize is to draw attention to that. As the national charity for art, we hope that by shining a light on the ten finalists we'll encourage people to visit and celebrate these bright beacons of culture across the UK.”

The winner will be announced live on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row from the award ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on 4 June.
