As one of the lead partners in a new project to digitise the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s historic archive for smartphone users, I’m keen to draw the attention of your readers to the recently launched Eye Shakespeare app.

The app has been developed jointly by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Coventry University’s Serious Games Institute (SGI), Hewlett Packard and Danwood, and offers visitors to Stratford-upon-Avon the ability to access hundreds of previously unseen artefacts and documents related to Shakespeare – all free of charge.

Part-funded by the Technology Strategy Board, the £500,000 initiative is a model that other museum and heritage organisations around the UK could take advantage of to promote their own collections and stories.

Eye Shakespeare was created at SGI, but it was the partnership work which made the project possible – the app draws on the trust’s archive and in so doing offers tourists a unique perspective on the bard’s life and times. Users can remotely access images, video and audio content related to each historic site in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Currently, the app is only available for iPhone but it will continue to be developed. We’re keen to hear from your readers with feedback on its usability so that the finished product reflects something the museum sector could benefit from.
