Thomas Power AMA - Museums Association

Thomas Power AMA

Support Services Manager, British Library

Essentially me and my team are responsible for the running of the building, my particular focus is the “soft side” of facility management which includes cleaning, catering (including public) and property management.

I also maintain and develop space strategy (i.e. where do we put everything/everyone?) and deliver a range of projects, often involving building or services work.

Facility management happens in every building but back in 2011 I decided that I wanted to specialise in museums and galleries, which are a rather unique challenge. The AMA seemed to be the best way to do this.

I think and work differently since finishing the AMA. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my skills, map my career path and clearly identify the steps needed to get me to where I want to be. It expanded my knowledge of other museum and gallery disciplines and greatly improved my networking and interpersonal skills, all of which are vital in my current role.

I would recommend the AMA to anyone. It gives you an opportunity to focus on your career in a structured way. Also the mentor system is a great help, mine certainly was!
