Arts council unveils diversity schemes
Change Makers includes a number of museum projects
Arts Council England (ACE) has announced details of a £4.6m plan to encourage greater diversity in England’s arts and cultural sector.
There are two strands to the initiative, with Change Makers having the most relevance to museums and galleries. This will invest £2.57m to increase the diversity of senior leaders within England’s arts and cultural organisations.
Change Makers will support 20 disabled and black and minority ethnic leaders from across England with bursaries to undertake training placements at National Portfolio Organisations or Major Partner Museums.
The successful Change Makers projects include Birmingham Museums Trust, which will use a £136,000 grant to host a training and development placement for Sara Wajid, senior manager at the National Maritime Museum in London.
Wajid, who is the Museums Association (MA) representative for London, is an active campaigner for diversity within England's museums, championing LGBT, women's and black and minority ethnic networks.
Another MA representative has also been successful: Tehmina Goskar will take part in a leadership scheme being run with the Cornwall Museums Partnership. This will include a CPD programme and a placement at the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro, in the run up to organisation’s 200th anniversary in 2018.
Other museums involved in Change Makers include London’s Design Museum; Manchester City Galleries; and the University of Cambridge Museums.
The other strand of the programme is Sustained Theatre, which will invest £2.1m to support the creation and touring of new plays by black and minority ethnic theatre makers.
