Museum jobs: registrar
Registrars tend only to exist in national and larger regional museums. Their job is to record information about objects.
In national museums this tends to be limited to information about the movement of loans in and out of the museum. This is a core activity for museums with international collections and large exhibition programmes.
In regional museums the registrar is often responsible for information about the condition of objects as well as where they are. Sophisticated information management systems mean that many regional registrars are IT experts too. In smaller museums the curator or collections manager will take on the role of registrar.
A national museum service that recently advertised for a senior registrar wanted someone to develop, integrate and implement corporate collections management standards. It wanted three years experience of practical collections management and it offered a salary of just over £25,000.
