Yorkshire AMA Support Group

Who are we?

The Yorkshire AMA Support Group is a forum for museum professionals working towards the attainment of the Associateship of the Museums Association (AMA).

We aim to:

  • provide an opportunity for those working towards the Associateship of the Museums Association to share experiences and network.

  • provide the opportunity to meet at scheduled times during the year and to arrange visits and speakers that will assist members in the AMA process.
What we get up to?

The AMA Support Group sets the agenda for the schedule of meetings which take the form of informal discussions on issues and topics on which delegates need guidance or that are relevant to their professional development.

The group meets quarterly, usually for a full day.

The meetings include a chance for a tour of the host museum and speakers from host museums also contribute to the day. This also gives delegates the chance to network.

The next AMA Support Group meeting in Yorkshire will be held in Manchester (a break with tradition!) at the People’s History Museum on Wednesday 12th April.

The itinerary is:

11am – meet at the People’s History Museum. Visit the museum’s Textile Conservation Studio and meet Senior Conservator, Jenny van Enckevort.
11.30 – 1pm – look around the museum’s galleries and exhibitions.
1pm – lunch in the museum’s Left Bank Café. A table is booked and we have to tell them our food order 10 days in advance of the meeting. If you are interested in attending, I will forward the menu to you.

We will then have our meeting in the café, including a catch up on our progress and an ethical debate.

Please email me at amy.rowbottom@bronte.org.uk if you would like to attend.

The AMA Support Groups are an excellent went of extending your knowledge of the different functions and roles of a museum. It enables you at second hand to meet and interview people that may have a remit for particular areas of the Knowledge Journal; as well as more broadly. So why not drop Amy a line and see when the next meeting is.

Please think about these questions and perhaps discuss the subject in advance with your colleagues.Q1. Last year there was outrage when several European newspapers printed cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammed. Would it be appropriate to display these images in a museum?Q2. At a recent Elton John Aids Foundation fundraising event in South Africa, a number of significant works of art by Gainsborough, Van Dyck and other artists were loaned by a museum and hung on the walls of the marquee to create a 'stately home' feel. Although recent reports such as Collections for the Future have called for more creative ways to increase access, is this appropriate? Many thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone on the 7th.Elinor shandyhallcollection@gmail.com
