We look forward to welcoming lots of fellow AMA-ers to the upcoming Support Group meetings - these informal get-togethers are a great way to talk through ideas, issues and progress with a group of friendly museum professionals who are all working towards the same goal, the dates of the next two meetings are:

20 September 2017, Wardown House, Luton

6 December 2017, Colchester Castle (TBC)

Please contact either myself (jordan.bacon@norfolk.gov.uk) or Miranda (miranda.rowlands@norfolk.gov.uk) if you'd like to be included on the mailing list, or you'd like more details about these meetings.

The AMA Support Groups are an excellent went of extending your knowledge of the different functions and roles of a museum. It enables you at second hand to meet and interview people that may have a remit for particular areas of the Knowledge Journal; as well as more broadly. So why not drop Grete a line and see when the next meeting is.

Next AMA support group meeting will be at Saffron Walden Museum Friday October 9th:

As a special offer - the South and East Museum Federation are offering a Study Day to AMAers without becoming a member. The SEMF offers fantastic opportunities to see behind the scenes in museums, hear about current projects and discuss issues, lots of opportunities for networking with fellow museum professionals. The Study and AMA day will take place on Friday 9th October and will be roughly as follows:

A talk from Leah, Collections Officer, about a large scale store move into a new purpose built store.
A talk from Carolyn, Curator, about the collections and origin of the museum (it's the one Britain's oldest museums!)
We'll also get a talk from Gemma about the education and outreach work that she does.
There will be a £7.50 charge for lunch (a fantastic networking opportunity) Booking will be available via eventbrite nearer the time.
At 2pm, there will be a room available for AMA related discussion for a couple of hours before closing by 4.

Thanks to Leah at Saffron Walden and Lauren from the SEMF for bringing the two events together. We hope you will appreciate the option of a whole day of goings on, I am really looking forwards to it.
Best wishes Grete

The next support group meeting is on Friday 12th December at Royston & District Museum and Art Gallery, starting at 11am.

If you would like to come, please let me know at chris@transplan.org, so that I can advise our host of numbers.

In the morning, we'll see something of the museum, courtesy of its Curator, Sarah Russell. In the afternoon, as part of our usual round-table discussion on the AMA and people's questions about it, we will be able to draw on the wisdom and experiences of three people, including our host, who have recently finished their AMA. This is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and get a longer-term perspective on the AMA process. The get-together is also an opportunity to share ideas, experiences and useful connections.

The museum is five minutes' walk from Royston railway station, with excellent connections from London King's Cross and Cambridge. You can its location on its web-site: http://www.roystonmuseum.org.uk/how_to_find_us.html .

Please make your own arrangements for lunch.

Regards,

Chris

Dear All,

The programme for the East of England AMA Support Group meeting in Norwich on Friday 6th December is now finalised and is set out below.

Please let me know if you're coming, so I can make sure the room is big enough, the front desk knows who to expect, and there's enough tea, coffee and biccies! Even if you can't make this one, please get in touch and let me know if you're happy for other people in the region doing the AMA to have your e-mail address (so that it will become easier for me to co-ordinate future meetings and send out information, and so that you can ask each other questions outside of meetings!). Contact me on: chris@transplan.org .

Thanks to those who have been in touch already!

Best wishes,

Chris

Venue

The Shirehall Study Centre (Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service), Market Avenue, Norwich (see below).

Programme

10:30 Tea, coffee and introductions.

10:45 A round-table discussion about the AMA, CPD and what people want out of the group. (Please feel free to bring up any specific AMA-related issues; we're all at different stages and come from different starting points, so may be able to help each other!)

12:45 Lunch break (sorry, not provided - but there are plenty of options close by).

13:45 A tour of the state-of-the-art Costume and Textiles store at the Shirehall with textile curator Lisa Little.

14:30 'Operation Teapot', a real-life case study of organising an emergency gallery decant, with conservator David Harvey.

15:00 Concluding discussions and future meetings.

15:30 Finish - tea and coffee for those wanting to stay and chat a little longer.

Finding the Shirehall Study Centre

The Shirehall is attached to the Castle Museum and Art Gallery, but at the opposite side from the Castle entrance, at the junction of Market Avenue and Castle Meadow. So, if you're coming by...

Train (www.greateranglia.co.uk): leave the station following the main pedestrian route ahead, cross the bridge and walk straight up Prince of Wales Road (it's the one with one-way traffic coming towards you), until you see the Castle mound and a war memorial. The Shirehall is to the left of the memorial.

Bus: Castle Meadow is the main city and county bus interchange, although some long-distance buses terminate at the Bus Station. Service information from Traveline: http://www.travelineeastanglia.org.uk/ea/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en&timeOffset=15 .

Car: best use the park and ride service (http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/Travel_and_transport/TravelNorfolk/Park_and_ride/index.htm) - city-centre car parks are geared to short-stay use.

Dear All,
As the new Co-ordinator I have been talking to those in the group with whom I already have contact and the MA about what people might want and where they are. There are currently two particular concentrations of people doing the AMA in the region, one in Hertfordshire, some looking to London, another in the Norfolk and East Suffolk area. It seems prudent, then, to try a two-centre approach, with no expectation that everyone will attend all meetings. To that end I am trying to organize one meeting in London (no dates as yet proposed, so it will probably be in the New Year now) and one in Norwich, to 'reboot' the group. The Norwich event is now booked for *Friday 6th December 2013* at the Shirehall in Norwich (attached to the Castle Museum and Art Gallery) and will involve a round-table discussion about the AMA, CPD and what people want out of the group, and a session designed to be useful CPD itself (watch this space!). If you want to come along, please e-mail me at the following e-mail address, chris@transplan.org , and I can send you details closer to the date. Please also state whether you are happy for other people in the region doing the AMA to have your e-mail address, so that 1) it will become easier for me to co-ordinate meetings and send out information and 2) you can ask each other questions outside of meetings! This is a support group, so no-one has all the answers - we are all at some stage of the AMA and can help each other with what we have learned so far and learn from others. I look forward to hearing from you! Best wishes, Chris
