The Museums Association (MA) will be hosting a free event for members in North East England at the Laing Art Gallery on 6 July.

The North East England Members’ Meeting is open to all the MA’s individual, corporate and institutional members and gives members the chance to hear about the work of the MA and to network with staff and colleagues from museums, galleries and heritage sites in the area.

A number of speakers will address the meeting, including Maggie Appleton, the recently-elected president of the MA, and chief executive officer of the RAF Museum, and MA representative Hannah Peaden, the head of visitor experience at The Auckland Project.

MA board member and director of Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums Iain Watson will also be speaking.

Sarah Cotton, the keeper of contemporary collecting at Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, will be talking about the Women of Tyneside exhibition, which is supported by Esmée Fairbairn Collections funding.

And Sharon Heal, the MA’s director, will be introducing the MA’s Collections 2030 scheme, looking at the long-term purpose, use and management of collections.

“The meeting will be a great opportunity for MA members to engage with the MA’s work, help shape our policy across the UK, and network with like-minded professionals,” says Simon Stephens, the MA’s head of publications and events. “It is also a good chance to hear about what is going on in North East England and get the inside track on the sector.”

Members’ Meetings will also be taking place in Scotland at the Glasgow Women’s Library on 11 September, and in the West Midlands at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on 28 November.
