MA calls for funding strategy for the sector

MA sets out position on sector funding
The Museums Association (MA) has published a position statement on public funding, calling for a funding strategy for the sector. The MA will be convening a meeting of sector bodies and other organisations to discuss a strategy.

Sharon Heal, the MA’s director, said: “There is growing concern about the current and future funding of the sector.

“The MA is actively advocating for the value of museums to society and we feel the time is ripe for a strategic cross-sector discussion about funding.”

Heal will be speaking at the event A Future for Regional Museums at the Courtauld Institute in London on 18 March.

And the MA’s president, David Anderson, will be debating the future of the museum sector at the event “A future for the past? Museums in the 21st Century”, at the Wallace Collection on 9 March.

Has anyone else chuckled at the irony that an event that is focusing on the very real challenges regional museums are facing is taking place in London?

I am sure many senior managers, responsible for budget management, have already received this advice, but should managers use their position to present arguments about how they can use the money given to them to ensure staff aren't made redundant and how existing services cannot get cut. Maybe managers should use a freelance/university mathematician or local business leaders or even national business leaders who live in their local areas who can advise upon calculations or different strategies.

I don't have a financial background not had budget-setting responsibilities so please accept my apologies for my ignorant or amateur contribution.
