The Museums Association (MA) has appointed Jenny Haslett, the museum manager of the Northern Ireland War Memorial (NIWM), to be its Northern Ireland representative.

Haslett joins Elaine Hill, the heritage development officer at Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. Together they will advise the MA on the Northern Ireland museum sector, and inform others in the sector of MA policy developments.

Haslett completed a masters in cultural heritage and museum studies in 2012 and joined the NIWM as education and outreach officer, going on to become museum manager.

She is responsible for caring for and developing the museum’s collection, delivering exhibitions, and implementing its audience development, education and outreach programmes.

Her work for the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, National Trust and the NIWM has given her a wealth of experience in collections, education and outreach, which she is looking to share with others in the sector.

“I believe great things happen when people share information about their museums,” she says. “And I believe I could motivate other museum professionals to use the MA as a platform to share their work.

“I am passionate about making collections accessible and I am proud to be part of the thriving museum sector in Northern Ireland.

“I enjoy a challenge, I work well under pressure and I am a confident speaker, all of which I think will make me a great ambassador of the MA as it seeks to increase its profile in Northern Ireland ahead of the conference in 2018.”

Member reps attend members’ meetings, speak on the MA’s behalf at meetings with regional and national bodies, and keep the association in touch with what is happening on the ground across the UK.

They also help to keep members in the local area up to date with MA activities and promote membership, communicating regularly through emails, newsletters and the website.
