Museums Association Conference and Exhibition
Bookings are now open for the Museums Association Conference & Exhibition 2012, the essential event in the museums and heritage calendar and one of the biggest networking opportunities for museum professionals in Europe.

The conference runs on Thursday 8 November and Friday 9 November at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. An early-bird discount is available for everyone who books before 30 August.

Delegates can choose from an exciting range of seminars, debates and networking sessions, with this year’s themes focused on social justice, national identity and Museums 2020, the MA’s ongoing campaign to create a bold vision for the future impact of museums.

Scottish culture secretary Fiona Hyslop will deliver the opening keynote address, discussing the progress of the Scottish national strategy for museums.

Other keynote speakers confirmed so far include human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar, who will outline the role museums can play in promoting social justice, and Martin Roth, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Sharon Heal, the MA’s head of publications and events, said: “Sometimes it’s difficult to look beyond the immediate short-term problems that lack of resources and pressure on time can bring.

"This year’s conference will discuss the future role that museums can play in society. I hope this will unleash some pent-up creativity and help determine the direction of museums over the next decade.

"I am particularly pleased that for the first time at conference, this year we will have a storyteller in residence. Donald Smith, the director of the Scottish Storytelling Centre, will be gathering ideas and opinions from delegates for a storytelling finale to the conference that I hope will help spark everyone’s imagination."

Tiered pricing means cheaper rates are available to MA members on lower salaries, as well as volunteer, student, unwaged or retired members.

The MA is also running a special partnership this year with the Scottish Museums Federation, in which members of the federation will qualify for the delegate rates usually reserved for MA members.
