Thirty MP workshops confirmed for Birmingham 2015
A programme of 30 free MP workshops led by experts and covering a wide range of topics will take place at the Museums Association (MA) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Birmingham.

The MP workshop programme is independent of the conference programme, and is free for exhibition visitors, exhibitors and conference delegates to attend. The workshops are designed to offer practical, insightful and case study-led content.

Highlights from this year’s programme include the opportunity to hear from a museum professional in Malawi on how an audience research project was used to create an interactive exhibition, insights from a co-production project with young trans people, practical advice on how storytelling techniques can create a richer visitor experience.

There will also be workshops on how to run successful crowdfunding campaigns; displaying sensitive stories and objects; using Google Analytics more effectively; engaging with people with dementia; and tips on starting a career in museums.

As in previous years, there will be a number of workshops exploring new innovations in digital technology. The British Museum will share how virtual reality is being used in its learning programme, Barnsley Museums will discuss a collaborative approach to developing a mobile app, and Birmingham Museums will introduce a community project that turns collections data into engaging digital experiences.

Simon Stephens, the MA’s head of publications and events, said: “MP workshops form an important part of the conference and exhibition, because they are an opportunity for visitors and delegates to receive practical advice on many different areas of museum practice, as well hear about recent projects from the experts.

“This year’s programme features everything from 3D printing and LED lighting to income generation and resilience, and we look forward to welcoming visitors and speakers in November.”

The MA Conference and Exhibition takes place at the Birmingham ICC on 5 and 6 November.
