Arts Council England (ACE) has announced that the first round of its £8m Museum Development fund is open for applications today.

Both single museums or museums services, and clusters of linked services in a partnership are encouraged to apply, but all museum applicants must be Accredited.

The total pot for this funding round is £2m for eight months from August 2012, with two further rounds of £3m for 2013 and 2014.

Mark Taylor, director of the Museums Association, said: "It is good to see that ACE are getting on with museum development as the delays have been destabilising for museums who rely on MDOs.

"However, credit to the arts council for committing to maintaining the fund even though it is not the sort of thing they had previously done themselves.

"We must hope that they now bring off the clever trick of ensuring a roughly equitable service is on offer to all medium and smaller museums across the country."

Bids are expected to demonstrate how they meet ACE’s five strategic goals: excellence, audiences, resilience, leadership and diversity, and children and young people.

The fund will primarily target those museums not covered by other strands of Renaissance funding.

Applications will be accepted up until 5pm on Wednesday 7 March 2012. The arts council will announce the successful applicants by Friday 27 April 2012.
