Arts Council England (ACE) has announced the appointment of Simon Mellow as its new executive director, arts.

Mellor, the former director-general of the Manchester International Festival (MIF), will replace outgoing arts director Andrew Nairne, who left the position in November to take the helm at Kettle’s Yard gallery in Cambridge.

In his new role, Mellor will oversee the development of the arts council’s current and future national arts strategy and policy agendas, as well as ensuring coherence across the organisation.

Aside from his experience at the MIF, Mellor was director of the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith for six years and has previously held roles at numerous arts organisations, including the Battersea Arts Centre and the Pegasus Theatre, Oxford.

ACE chief executive Alan Davey said: "I’m delighted to welcome someone of Simon’s calibre and track record to the arts council. He has made the MIF a force to be reckoned with across all art forms.”

Mellor said: “I’m looking forward to working with Alan and the team to help make the arts council’s plans to achieve great art for everyone a reality.”

ACE assumed responsibility for museums and archives in England last October following the abolition of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
