Partnerships with Purpose to stimulate relationships that build social value
The Museums Association (MA) is launching Partnerships with Purpose: Connecting museums with third sector organisations, a pilot scheme funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation that aims to stimulate partnerships that build social value.

The pilot project will see the MA produce four networking events for museums, community groups and third sector organisations. The events will be spread across the UK to test the efficacy of this approach to increase participation in museums and assess the potential for a national programme.

“The MA believes that work to build social value in museums is at a crucial tipping point,” says Sally Colvin, the MA’s programmes manager. “For several years we have seen support for Museums Change Lives increasing, but we have also seen that individuals struggle to move beyond their comfort zone to make contact with a wider network of community groups and third sector organisations to broaden access and increase participation.

“Our pilot project seeks to address key barriers to museums becoming truly participatory organisations, as identified through the work of Our Museum - notably fear and staff resistance to ceding control and sticking with less challenging partners. It will also help museums to understand their role in terms of local needs and potential community agency to develop their socially engaged practice.”

The MA is currently recruiting a Partnerships with Purpose projects officer with a good overview of the charity sector to develop and run the project on a day-to-day basis.
