Increase in membership reflects need for strong professional body
The Museums Association (MA) has reached more than 7,000 members for the first time after a growth in the number of students, professionals and sole traders signing up for its services.
Membership has grown considerably in the last year and has an increased by more than 1,000 members since March 2013.
Will Adams, the head of commercial activities at the MA, says the boost in membership is indicative of the need for organisation that supports its members and champions the value of museums in a time of changing politics, funding cuts and devolution.
Strong advocacy, the work on a new Code of Ethics, successful campaigns, such as Museums Change Lives, and projects like Transformers have all played an important role in further raising the profile of the association.

Members meetings and the annual conference and exhibition, which this year will include 30 workshops that are free to attend, also give members the opportunity to network, discuss issues of the day and share best practice.

Adams says: “To reach 7,100 members is fabulous news and a tribute to the skill and dedication of members and staff alike. However, we will not rest on our laurels because the museums sector needs a strong and connected membership body to stand up for its interests in these challenging times.”

The MA will continue to develop strong networks and boost membership in each nation and has recently updated its policy document MA and the nations, outlining its policy priorities for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
