A UK-wide survey has been launched by a-n: The Artists Information Company with the aim of setting a benchmark for fair exhibition payment for artists.

The Exhibition Payment Survey 2018 will inform the work of the Paying Artists Working Group, which was set up by a-n to implement and develop exhibition payment guidance over the next four years.

The survey aims to address the lack of widely agreed guidance as to how much artists should be paid for creating work shown in publicly-funded galleries and museums.

It is open to both individual artists themselves and organisations in receipt of public funding, with a different set of questions for each. Museum directors, curators and other people involved in commissioning exhibitions are encouraged to take part.

The organisation hopes the survey will help to establish a benchmark for actual payments made to, and received by, artists from exhibitions across the UK. A follow-up survey will be run in 2020.

The data will be used in upcoming editions of a-n’s Exhibition Payment Guide to reflect artists’ experiences and the capacity of organisations to make fair payments at regional and national level.

Jeanie Scott, the executive director of a-n, said: “We’re on the way to exhibition payment becoming the norm – some big steps have been taken, but there’s still a fair way to go. But with the continued support from our artists, exhibition commissioners and funders, we will see a stronger and more diverse sector emerge.”

Alistair Brown, the policy officer at the Museums Association (MA), which is a member of the working group, said: “The MA supports efforts to ensure fair pay in the museum sector and has recently produced its own set of salary guidelines, so we’re happy to see a-n engaging with the sector on how to deliver fair pay for artists.

"We’d really encourage museums and curators that commission artists to participate in this survey.”
