The Tate, National Galleries of Scotland and University of Edinburgh have launched a free online course dedicated to the life and work of the late artist Andy Warhol as part of the Artist Rooms initiative.

The five-week Massive Open Online Course
(Mooc), which begins next April, covers subjects such as celebrity, sex, money and death.

The market value of his works, and the stratospheric prices they’ve achieved at auction, will also be explored.

The Pittsburgh-born artist, whose 1963 painting Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) sold for $105.4m at Sotheby’s New York earlier this month, said that “making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art”.

Students who successfully complete the class will receive a statement of accomplishment signed by instructors from Edinburgh College of Art and the School of Education at the University of Edinburgh.

Moocs are free online courses developed by leading universities.

A joint statement on the project said: “The development of this Mooc affords the opportunity for Artist Rooms to do important early work in establishing the impact of Moocs on gallery learning.”

The Tate and National Galleries of Scotland have also announced details of the sixth Artist Rooms tour, which covers 16 venues across the UK next year. The tour is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and the Art Fund.

Artist Rooms is jointly owned and managed by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. It is made up of more than 725 works collected by Anthony d’Offay, who sold them to the nation in 2008 for £26.5m, the price he originally paid for them.
