Nottingham Contemporary appoints new director

Sam Thorne to join in 2016 from Tate St Ives
Nottingham Contemporary has appointed Sam Thorne, the artistic director of Tate St Ives, as its new director.

He replaces Alex Farquharson, who joins Tate Britain this autumn as director following Penelope Curtis’s departure for Portugal to head up the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.

Thorne, who will take up the post in Nottingham early next year, joined Tate in 2014 and leads on the exhibitions, research, learning and interpretation.

He is a contributing editor at Frieze magazine and a visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art in London. Prior to 2014, Thorne has lectured widely and was the associate editor of Frieze magazine. He also co-founded Open School East, a free art school in East London, in 2013.

"I am delighted that Thorne has agreed to become the next director of Nottingham Contemporary,” said Jack Kirkland, the chairman of Nottingham Contemporary. “His vision, intelligence and drive will, I believe, make this a tremendously exciting new phase in the gallery's history."

Thorne said: “I look forward to building on the extraordinary programme that Farquharson and the team have developed during the organisation’s first six years, and to helping articulate the next chapter.”

Farquharson was Nottingham Contemporary's first executive director, having co-founded the gallery along with a board of trustees in 2009.
