Birmingham Museums Trust has appointed Ellen McAdam as its new director.

McAdam will leave her position as head of museums and collections at Glasgow Life to take up the new post in Birmingham in the autumn. She has worked for the organisation since 2001.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a collection of international significance, fantastic venues and a highly skilled team,” McAdam said. “Birmingham is a great city with an exciting cultural offer, and I look forward to exploring it.”

Birmingham Museum Trust was established in April 2012 and includes Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Thinktank science museum and several historic buildings.

At the end of last year, Ann Sumner resigned as director of the trust only eight months after taking up the post to become executive director of the Bronte Society in Keighley.

The post of director of Birmingham Museums Trust overseeing nine sites was first advertised with a salary of £75,000-£90,000.

Simon Cane has acted as interim director since Sumner’s departure. One of his roles has been to oversee a restructure that could see the loss of 20 posts. An organisation-wide consultation to find £400,000 of savings next year is due to conclude in November.

Responding to McAdam’s appointment, Len Clark, chairman of Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Ellen to the organisation. Her vast knowledge and experience of the museums and heritage sector will be invaluable and we look forward to her leading Birmingham Museums Trust into the next phase.”

A new chair for the trust is also expected to be announced in the autumn.

A spokesman for Glasgow Life said it would start looking for McAdam's replacement in the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London has appointed Abraham Thomas, curator of designs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, as director.

Thomas replaces Tim Knox, who has left to become director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
