£8.2m awarded by Clore Duffield Foundation
Grants awarded for 11 new Clore learning centres
Seven museums and galleries are among recipients of grants totalling £8.2m awarded by the Clore Duffield Foundation.
Grants ranging from £125,000 to £2.5m will help fund Clore learning centres for children and young people in a total of 11 cultural organisations across England – four art galleries, three museums, three theatres and one royal palace.
The museum and gallery recipients are: the Holburne Museum, Bath; Kensington Palace; Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge; Museum of Liverpool; Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, Cornwall; Tate Britain; Turner Contemporary, Margate; Whitworth Gallery, Manchester.
The Donmar Warehouse and the National Theatre in London, and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, will also benefit from the funding.
Projects resulting from the grant will be delivered over the next four years, with the first opening in April this year and the last in 2014. Tate Britain and the National Theatre have been awarded the largest grants (£2.5m). Click here to download a summary of the different projects
Vivien Duffield, chairwoman of the Clore Duffield Foundation, said culture should be at the heart of children’s learning. She added: “I believe passionately that children and young people deserve the very best opportunities to benefit from the transforming power of our world class cultural organisations."
John Barnes, director of conservation and learning at Historic Royal Palaces, which has received a £500,000 grant, said, “Kensington Palace's new Clore Learning Centre will transform the educational experience that Historic Royal Palaces can offer at this wonderful palace.”
And Janet Dugdale, director of the Museum of Liverpool, which has received £200,000, said: “The funding will have a great impact on the gallery, allowing us to realise this interactive space for our youngest visitors to begin their museum experience. They will learn about Liverpool on a level they can relate to, while being encouraged to continue their Museum of Liverpool journey during a fantastic and fun-filled day out.”
