National Trust appoints Hilary McGrady as director general

Current chief operating officer will take up the post in March
The National Trust has appointed Hilary McGrady, the organisation’s chief operating officer, as its next director general.

McGrady will succeed Helen Ghosh when she steps down in March to become the first female master of Balliol College at the University of Oxford.

Tim Parker, the chairman of the National Trust, said in a statement last month that the appointment had been a unanimous decision by the organisation’s board of trustees.

McGrady said: “I am immensely proud to have been appointed as director general of the National Trust. This is a charity I love because it looks after the things that matter to me personally, the outdoors, the arts, heritage, nature and beauty.

“But more importantly these are things that I believe matter to the nation which is why we have five million members and many more supporters. I am looking forward to building on that support and inspiring even more people to look after the places that matter to them.”

McGrady has worked for the National Trust for 12 years, the last four of which have been as chief operating officer. She began her career in marketing in the drinks industry, and became chief executive of Belfast’s bid to be European Capital of Culture in 2002. McGrady also worked as a cultural tourism consultant before joining the trust. She will take up the post on 12 March, the week following Ghosh’s departure.
