Orr to step down as chief executive officer after 13 years
Joanne Orr is stepping down as the chief executive officer of Museums Galleries Scotland(MGS) after 13 years in post. John McLeish, currently the chairman of the Scottish Tartans Authority, will take over as the interim chief executive officer on 21 February.

A recruitment sub-committee of the MGS board, led by John Leighton, the director general of National Galleries of Scotland, is leading the recruitment process for Orr’s successor.

Under Orr’s tenure, MGS transitioned from being a regional membership body to becoming the national development body for museums in Scotland, and produced the national strategy for the sector.

However, the transition in 2013 saw MGS lose £92,500 in annual subscriptions, compounded by a £15,000 cut to its core revenue grant from the Scottish government in 2014-15.

Orr is leaving “to pursue interests in international consultancy in both museum development and intangible cultural heritage”.
