Basra museum could open in three years
The British Museum (BM), the British Army, and the Iraqi Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities are waiting for the go-ahead from the Iraqi prime minister's office on a proposal to create a new museum in Iraq.

The museum would be situated at the Lakeside Palace in Basra and would display objects that were moved to Baghdad for safe-keeping before 2003. It would replace the existing Basra Museum, which was looted and badly damaged during the war.

The BM would provide curatorial advice and help with fundraising, while the British Army would help with access. Some repairs to the building are needed but if approval is forthcoming, said a BM spokeswoman, then the new museum could be open within as little as three years.
