Creative Bill thrown out

Proposals for single arts body not dead
Political wrangling has been blamed for the failure of the Creative Scotland Bill to be passed by the Scottish parliament.

The Bill, which proposed a single body to replace the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen, was voted down on 18 June after opposition parties claimed Scottish culture minister Linda Fabiani had not clarified the financial implications.

In a statement, Fabiani insisted that the Scottish government was still committed to setting up Creative Scotland and said the Bill would be presented again in September.

Scottish Green Party MSP Robin Harper described the situation as "a complete muddle" and said that most of the elements of the Bill could be introduced without legislation.
