The Cartoon Museum in London is developing a display about last week’s terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left 12 people dead. A further five people died, including one policewoman and four hostages, in events connected to the attack.

The museum has been collecting newspapers that have documented the story, including British cartoonists’ responses, of which it is considering acquiring one or two for its permanent collection. The story may also form part of a future exhibition on free speech.

“We have been looking at doing an exhibition on free speech and censorship for some time and part of that may include the Charlie Hebdo story,” said Anita O’Brien, the director and curator at the museum.

“It is part of wider discussions regarding the representation of different religious and minority groups together with free speech and censorship that we have touched on in a number of our exhibitions and undoubtedly will again.”

The first edition of Charlie Hebdo since the massacre is to be printed on 14 January, with 3m copies to be distributed worldwide in 16 languages.

Other museums have expressed their support for Charlie Hebdo.

On 10 January, the Persmuseum in Amsterdam - which specialises in the history of journalism - unveiled a display that pays homage to the artists of Charlie Hebdo.

statement on the Comics Art Museum in Brussels says: “At the Comics Museum we are horrified and shocked by the brutal attack on Charlie Hebdo. Even more than an attack on the freedom of speech, we perceive it as an attack on all liberties.”

We said the Cartoon Museum is planning to display Charlie Hebdo cartoons. In fact, the planned display will be of responses to the Charlie Hebdo story, not Charlie Hebdo cartoons.
