A new gallery of "national significance" has opened in a multi-million-pound cultural centre in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, south-west Wales, with the aim of bringing some of the nation's most important artwork and objects to the county.

The £3.4m Glan-yr-Afon facility opened on 7 December in the town's former Riverside Market building, and also contains a library and information centre.

In partnership with the National Library of Wales, the gallery will host a programme of six-month-long exhibitions that display the library's collections, as well as a permanent exhibition on the history, culture, art and legends of Pembrokeshire.

Linda Tomos, the chief executive and librarian at the National Library of Wales, said: "We are delighted to be a part of this exciting new project. We look forward to sharing our collections with the people of Pembrokeshire and beyond."

The opening exhibition, Kyffin Williams: Land and Sea, will feature the work of Welsh artist Kyffin Williams, celebrating the centenary of his birth.

Paul Miller, the cabinet member for economy, tourism, leisure and culture at Pembrokeshire County Council, said: "It provides a blueprint for the way we need to engage with our customers.

"I look forward to similar innovative developments in the future to help revitalise our town centres."
The Welsh government is currently considering plans to establish a national gallery of contemporary art, which would have a dispersed collection that could be shown at existing sites across the country.
