The Canal & River Trust has appointed Graham Boxer as its head of museums.

From 27 April he will be responsible for the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port and the Gloucester Waterways Museum, plus all of the trust's designated museum and archive collections.

Boxer joins the trust from Imperial War Museums (IWM) where he was responsible for the overall vision, direction and operation of IWM North in Manchester. He has previously worked for Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Culture Company, and St George’s Hall and National Museums & Galleries on Merseyside.

Boxer said he planned to raise the profile of the museum’s work in maintaining canals and the “nationally significant collection and archives”.

Canal & River Trust chief executive Richard Parry said: “Graham brings with him a wealth of experience, knowledge and networks within the museum, archives and collections sector.

“Graham will develop and deliver a sustainable plan for the museums, while acting as our adviser on all matters of policy concerning the historic archives and collection in our care, drawing on his considerable experience from the museum sector. He joins a motivated and engaged team of employees and volunteers who will help deliver a first-class museum service for the trust.”
