Margot James becomes culture minister
Following a cabinet reshuffle yesterday, Matt Hancock has been promoted to secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, replacing Karen Bradley, who has become Northern Ireland secretary.

Hancock was previously minister of state for digital and culture, and in that role promised a "frank assessment" of the challenges facing museums, and to propose ways to overcome them.

He takes up his new role in the wake of the Mendoza Review, published in November, which made a number of recommendations, including a joined-up approach from government and its arms-length bodies, a clearer museums role for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and a more effective use of lottery funding for museums.

Margot James has been appointed as minister of state, and Michael Ellis is now parliamentary under-secretary of state.
