Imperial War Museums (IWM) has appointed a new director for IWM North to replace Jim Forrester, who retires at the end of the month.

Graham Boxer joins IWM North from Liverpool City Council where he has been head of arts, heritage and participation for three years.

His previous roles include assistant museums officer and curator at the Manchester Regiment Collection, head of regional history at National Museums & Galleries Merseyside and director of St George’s Hall in Liverpool.

He was also head of heritage development at Liverpool Culture Company prior to joining Liverpool City Council.

Diane Lees, director general of IWM, said: “Graham has made an outstanding contribution to the arts, heritage and museum sector so far and I am sure that he will be excellent in leading IWM North in its exciting next phase of development and IWM’s national programme to mark the centenary of the first world war in 2014.”

Boxer will take up the new position on 1 April ahead of IWM North’s 10th anniversary in July.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to joining such an exciting museum and continuing to develop its groundbreaking programme of exhibitions and events.”

Forrester has been director at IWM North since 2002 when the museum first opened.
