Loss of funding leads to shorter opening hours in Bristol

Move to trust status is being considered
Museums in Bristol will have shorter opening hours during the winter, while two venues will close completely, following funding cuts of £130,000.

A review of services in the city in light of Renaissance cuts will lead to museums opening at 10.30am, rather than 10am.

The Georgian House and Red Lodge, which have reopened after maintenance work, will open to the public six days a week rather than four during the summer holidays, but will close during the winter.

Elsewhere, Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery is now open until 8pm on Wednesdays, in response to visitor demand.

Blaise Castle House Museum’s opening hours will increase from five to six days a week throughout the summer holidays.

Simon Cook, Bristol’s cabinet member for culture, sport and capital projects, said: “Our new opening times reflect the demand for late-night opening, variable seasonal pressures and flexible working patterns for staff.”

The council is considering moving its museums to trust status. The Museum of Bristol, or M Shed, already has a board of trustees appointed and is looking at fundraising opportunities ahead of its spring 2011 opening.

A spokeswoman for Bristol museum service said there were no plans to introduce admission charges.
