Windrush Foundation awarded £238k by HLF
The Windrush Foundation has received £238,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for its Emancipation 1838 project, marking the 175th anniversary of the emancipation from slavery of about a million African people in the Caribbean.

Funding will go towards a website, educational material  and two touring exhibitions running throughout 2013 that will tell the stories of emancipation using original documents and objects.

Emancipation 1838 will also tell the stories behind the migration of hundreds of thousands of people to the UK from 1948, when African Caribbean settlers landed at Tilbury Docks, Essex, on the ship Empire Windrush.

The Windrush Foundation is a charity aiming to promote good race and community relations and to eliminate ethnic discrimination.
