Scheme extends backing for further three years
The Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, managed by the Museums Association, will extend its programme of support for the museum sector for another three years. Funding of £1m will be available annually until 2016.

Between 2011 and 2013, the fund administered £800,000 worth of grants per year.

The increase is due to strong demand and the quality of applications to the fund in the past three years.

The fund offers grants of between £20,000 and £100,000 to increase the use, access to and knowledge of collections outside the scope of an organisation’s core resources.

A review of the project by Virginia Tandy, former director of culture at Manchester City Council, concluded that the fund occupied an important place in the “funding ecology for museums, encouraging early stage research and development that can then lead to bigger developments such as requests for capital investment to the Heritage Lottery Fund”.
