Moving on up: The secrets of a successful museum career (#MOU2014) is a one-day career development and networking conference at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on 6 February.

The programme for the day, which includes inspirational keynote speakers, practical workshops, speed mentoring and roundtable discussion, has been put together by a committee. Here they share what aspects of the day they’re most looking forward to.

Katy Archer, director, People’s History Museum

"I’m really interested to talk to delegates at Moving On Up about what it’s like today to be in the first stages of your museum career – to hear about people’s goals, dreams, challenges and opportunities. It’s always great to talk about what our profession is really like from a range of points of view and to reflect on my own journey in museums so far."

21012014-gemma (ID 1061746)

Gemma Dhami, museum development officer, Worcestershire

"This year's Moving On Up is going to be a great opportunity for people in their early careers in the sector, and I'm really looking forward to meeting a wealth of enthusiastic next-generation directors, curators and more. By arming young professionals with skills from great speakers such as Hilary McGowan and Liz Hide, we can really support people into the sector."

21012014-james (ID 1061747)

James Etherington, visitor services team manager, Ashmolean Museum

"I never thought I would say this but I am looking forward to the networking. I usually have to make a special effort to make myself network but I think the spread of sessions, the activities being planned and the fact that everyone attending the conference will be in the same position in their career should make networking much easier."

21012014-lynsey (ID 1061757)

Lynsey Fairweather, participation coordinator, ThinkTank

"Like most of the delegates I am also in the first five years of my career. I really feel like every bit of Moving on Up will be so useful to us newbies but I am especially looking forward to hearing the panel of museum directors being quizzed by the room. I hope they are ready!"

21012014-jennifer (ID 1061748)

Jennifer Reid, national partnerships officer, National Museums Scotland

"I am particularly looking forward to hearing from Kristin Hussey and Terri Dendy from Ministry of Curiosity, and to hear how they have found a balance between their own personalities and styles while still remaining professional and credible in the way they write their blog. I am also looking forward to the opportunity to meet new people at the same stage in their careers as me, and to have creative and valuable conversations about the issues facing us."

21012014-alex (ID 1061745)

Alex Woodall, Phd researcher and freelancer, Leicester University

"I am looking forward to thinking about leadership within the profession by getting advice from some of the real ‘gurus’ of the UK museum world, as well as meeting people with big aspirations of their own. I am also interested in discussing how the sector embraces a balance between practice and research – and all this over a nice glass of wine during the networking reception!"
