Call for case studies: front-of-house museum work

Share your examples of support, development and inclusion for front-of-house workers

We are committed to the inclusive and professional treatment of our front-of-house museum colleagues, and we are working with Front-of-House in Museums (FoHMuseums) to co-create a Charter for Change specifically for front-of-house workers (FoH).

Following successful engagement with the Front-of-House Charter for Change survey, which received over 300 responses, we have developed a draft charter.

This draft has been tested with individuals who participated in our original research, and as a function of this testing we have refined our approaches, which we successfully shared at a session at the MA annual conference.

We are now looking to showcase examples of good front-of-house working practice to inspire and encourage other organisations.

Please send your case studies to Tamsin Russell, tamsin@museumsassociation.org, following the case study guidance and questions below. The deadline for submission of case studies is 7 February 2022.

Please also email Tamsin if this is an area of work you are interested in exploring further.

Guidance and questions

In your response, please provide the following information, giving as much detail as you like:

For organisations
  • Name, job title and organisation (if relevant)
  • What have you and your organisation put in place to support and include front-of-house staff?
  • What have been the benefits for your organisation?
  • What are the biggest barriers when it comes to inclusion?
  • Do you have any other plans to support front-of-house colleagues?
  • Do you have any other comments about the support or treatment of front-of-house roles and teams?
For front-of-house colleagues
  • Name, job title and organisation (if relevant)
  • What has your organisation put in place to support and include you?
  • As a front-of-house colleague has your experience of work been positively affected by any changes your organisation has made to include, support and develop you?
  • Do you have any other comments about the support, treatment of front of house roles and teams?

Tamsin Russell, our workforce development officer, said: “We have taken our time and listened to colleagues from different front-of-house roles and teams. This has enhanced our thinking and, for example, the terminology we include. We hope by having some clear examples of what organisations can do to improve the experience of work for front-of-house colleagues, that the sector will embrace these ideas and examples to effect positive change within their own organisations.”

The Front-of-House Charter for Change is due to launch in the first quarter of 2022.
