Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Museums similarly balance the interests of different generations. As well as serving society today, they aim to pass on collections, information and knowledge to people in the future.
The Museums Association believes that concepts of sustainability will help museums. We're interested in sustainability in its broadest sense: social, environmental and economic.
We're encouraging museums to think about sustainability. We've published a short introduction and a longer discussion paper.
We've organised free half-day discussion sessions about sustainability. They will inspire you to think about the future direction of your museum and help you improve its environmental, economic and social sustainability.
There will also be an opportunity to comment on the MA's discussion paper. We'd be delighted to meet you at one of these events.
