International museum organisations

Museums across the world are linked in many ways - they have shared histories, they are united by shared themes, concerns, culture and collections. The Museums Association, founded in 1889, is the oldest of its kind in the world, and over the years has forged strong links with museums and museums associations all over the globe...

International Council of Museums (ICOM): http://icom.museum

ICOM is a multinational body funded by membership of museums and museum professionals from around the world and based in Paris. It is a forum in which museums and the museum community can exchange ideas and concepts and is also a powerful force in lobbying governments and other international organisations about issues around museums and cultural heritage.

Members within countries are also members of their national committee which ensures that ICOM internationally has a wide spread of members and interests and opportunities for people to get involved on the wider international stage.

Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO): www.ne-mo.org

NEMO is the loose network of museums associations in Europe. It aims to be the voice of museums to European institutions, particularly the European Union, to let them know what the main issues for museums are and to ensure that a museum voice is heard.

European Museum Forum (EMF): www.emya.org

Based in Bristol, EMF tries to interpret the dynamics between museum and public in the different European social and cultural contexts and to encourage fruitful relationships between museum professionals and the variety of stakeholders in the museum life.

Tourism Heritage Export Group (THE): www.uktradeinvest.gov.uk

As part of a wider leisure initiative, a cultural heritage and tourism group, THE, has been formed with support from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the government export agency, UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) with a remit to encourage the export of key expertise and goods to museum organisations internationally. The first chair of this group is the MA's director, Mark Taylor.
