Advocacy on the agenda at members' meeting

Rebecca Atkinson, 25.11.2011
Final speaker confirmed for London event
The Museums Association’s (MA) London members’ meeting will include expert advice on advocacy and how museums in the capital can make the case for their organisations.

Sally MacDonald, director of University College London museums and collections, will look at the advocacy challenges London museums face and offer advice on how they can get their voices heard.

The meeting, which will be held at the British Museum in London on 5 December, is free to all individual, institutional and corporate MA members living or working in London.

Other speakers include Sam Mullins, director of London Transport Museum and MA board member, who will address the needs of museums in London and explore what the future, including London 2012, might hold.

Peter Heslip, relationship manager at Arts Council England, will discuss the relationship between the arts council and London museums, while Judy Lindsay, head of museums at Central Saint Martins and chairwoman of the London Museum Group, will speak about the museum community in London.

One of the group’s most recent developments is the launch of a skills sharing and partnership scheme in the capital. Melissa Bentley, museums development officer at the Museum of London, will explain how the share scheme works.

The MA introduced free members’ meetings as part of last year’s governance restructure, with the aim of keeping members informed and giving them more input in the policies and direction of the association. The first two meetings were held in Wales and Yorkshire.

The afternoon programme will include talks on the MA’s activities including Museums Journal and Museum Practice; financially-motivated disposals; current policy work; and collections.

Places at the London MA members' meeting are limited so please book to avoid disappointment.

Email Lorraine O'Leary at lorraine@museumsassociation.org to reserve a place.

The MA would like to thank the Amgueddfa cymru (National Museum Wales), Leeds City Museum and the British Museum for kindly providing venues for the members’ meetings free of charge
