Arts and humanities academics invited to apply
The Museums Association (MA) is offering a fellowship placement to arts and humanities academics to conduct research into the sale of museum collections.

Supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the time-limited fellowship will review a range of issues relating to the sale of museum collections in the UK and provide policy advice for the sector.

During the placement, the fellow will be expected to develop an understanding of the contemporary value of collections and the challenges of financially-motivated disposal; examine the dynamic between the media and museums on issues relating to disposal; review developments since the 2007 change to the MA Code of Ethics; and learn the views of national and international museum-related bodies on the subject.

MA director Mark Taylor said: “Ethics in general and the intricacies and principles of sales in particular are getting more complex and more contentious.

“It will be good to have real input and guidance on these and related issues that will help the MA and the museum sector in ways that address the concerns of museums but also retain the confidence and trust of the public.”

The fellow will attend the MA offices at least two days a week and may also have the opportunity to work with the AHRC.

The closing date for applications is 28 June 2011.
