Ed Vaizey, the Conservative MP for Wantage and Didcot, was confirmed this week as minister for culture in the new coalition Government.

Vaizey joins culture secretary Jeremy Hunt at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Also on the ministerial team are John Penrose, minister for tourism and heritage, and sports minister Hugh Robertson.

Vaizey takes over from outgoing arts minister Margaret Hodge, with responsibility for arts, creative industries, communications and museums and galleries.

The new DCMS team pledged support this week for maintaining Labour's free admissions policy, but warned of upcoming budget cuts.

Vaizey has previously said that he would implement "smart savings" targeting administration and bureaucracy rather than "across-the-board" reductions.
