MA publishes diversify toolkit for museums

Toolkit contains comprehensive guide to diversifying the workforce
Lucy Shaw, the MA’s diversify coordinator, said: “The updated toolkit contains lots of ideas for how your museum can progress workforce diversity and development, with tips for structuring training that are useful for all staff.
”It also covers the MA’s bursaries for people from less affluent backgrounds and Bill Kirby traineeships for deaf and disabled people.”
The MA received over 200 applications for its six new bursaries for people from less affluent backgrounds, and is currently interviewing for the six museums taking part in the scheme: Tyne and Wear Archives Service, Museum of London, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Bankfield Museum, Halifax, and the London Transport Museum.
“Because it is such a difficult sector to get into, museums have to introduce these sorts of interventions to help people get on the first rung of the ladder,” said Shaw. “The bursaries will be a life-changing opportunity for some people who could not otherwise afford to get the experience they need for a career in museums.”
