Accreditation Committee seeks five new members

Committee will oversee revamped Accreditation Scheme
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) is looking to appoint five new members to its Accreditation Committee.

The Committee oversees the Accreditation Scheme, providing support to museums and making final decisions on Accredited status. Over 1,800 museums across the UK currently take part in the scheme.

The MLA is seeking applicants with extensive experience of museum management at a senior level and a broad understanding of the museum sector. People working in national, independent, local authority, university, military and integrated museums, as well as library and archive services, are invited to apply.

Appointments are initially for three years, and members will attend no more than two panel meetings and one full meeting of the Accreditation Committee each year. The positions are honorary, but reasonable expenses can be claimed for travel and subsistence.

The Accreditation Scheme helps museums assess their current performance and develop their services to a nationally-agreed standard. The 22-year-old scheme has been revamped to simplify the process and allow greater flexibility, and will be open to new and returning participants from autumn.

The revised standard puts more emphasis on visitor experience and encourages museums to be more responsive to communities and share good practice.

The scheme is currently administered by the MLA in collaboration with devolved national agencies. It will transfer to Arts Council England (ACE) on 1 October.

Museums Association director Mark Taylor said he had been encouraged by ACE’s support of the scheme: “As the museum function moves to an organisation that is still learning about the sector, it is good to see Accreditation - the DNA of the sector - retaining its central role.”

The closing date for applications to the Accreditation Committee is 20 July 2011.

It's good to see that potential Accreditation Committee members are being given over a month to submit their application. This is unlike consultants interested in submitting a tender to provide Accreditation advice to the regions who had just 2 weeks. The regions cover large areas (one includes the SW, W Midlands and London) so not the type of information you have at your finger tips.
Far too many contracts are advertised with too short a time to prepare a realistic tender and so discriminate against smaller contractors or those who dare take a holiday.
