Opportunity to shape organisation's strategic framework
The Museums Association (MA) is urging members to respond to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) online consultation into its strategic framework for 2013-19.
The HLF is consulting the heritage sector over its future funding priorities, based on its analysis of the emerging funding environment for heritage in the next few years.
The organisation will have an annual budget for heritage of about £300m from 2013 onwards, up from £205m for 2010-11, thanks to strong lottery ticket sales, increased income after the 2012 Olympics, and the government boosting the share of lottery money going to heritage.
The HLF is seeking feedback on what it should continue doing, what it may need to do differently, and what new initiatives could have the greatest impact.
The MA’s newly elected board discussed the consultation at its first meeting last week and identified a number of key points it plans to highlight in response.
In particular, the MA board will urge HLF not to downplay learning and participation, warning that neglecting these areas in its strategic framework would weaken the sustainability of heritage organisations.
The MA board said it would strongly support the organisation’s desire to do more to help the sector share skills and expertise.
The board will also recommend that HLF make sustainability and organisational resilience one of its strategic aims, asking the organisation to consider offering grants that have the specific aim of reducing costs or raising income.
The MA's head of policy and communication, Maurice Davies, said: “The new MA board discussed this in detail in its meeting last week and board members and staff have attended several consultation events. We will of course be responding to the consultation on behalf of museums and in addition we would encourage members to respond.
“The survey takes time to complete but we think it is well worth it as HLF is such an important supporter and funder of museums.”
The consultation is open until 26 April 2011.
