The Museums Association (MA) is to hold a one-day seminar on copyright and the new general data protection regulations, which come into force next May.

Law and Order: Copyright and New Data Protection Regulations takes place on 8 December at the Royal College of Physicians in London.

Chaired by Heather Caven, the director of the Victoria & Albert Museum Collections Centre, the conference will offer practical support for museums of all sizes that are interested in general compliance, taking a commercial approach to intellectual property assets and managing risk when undertaking digitisation projects.

In the morning, delegates will hear about the latest UK and EU policy developments for copyright from Ben White, the head of intellectual property at the British Library in London.

Matthew Bailey, the rights and images manager at London’s National Portrait Gallery, will offer practical advice on monetising and promoting your assets, while copyright and compliance specialist Naomi Korn will explain museums can benefit from copyright exemptions.

John Peel, the collection information manager for the Manchester Museums Partnership, will discuss how organisations of any size can implement copyright policies and procedures.

And Victoria Stobo, an archivist and postgraduate researcher at CREATe, part of the University of Glasgow, will explain the practical ways museums can use risk assessment to increase public access to Orphan Works and third-party material.

Pamela Forde, the archive manager at the Royal College of Physicians, will share her experiences of moving an organisation from current compliance with data protection to compliance under the new regulations.

The afternoon session will be run by Naomi Korn Copyright Consultancy. Delegates will be able to participate in an interactive and informative workshop covering the new general data protection regulations. As well as covering the key changes and how they will impact their organisation, delegates will receive best practice advice on the steps they need to undertake to ensure their organisations are ready for the new regulations.
