First advocacy training workshop is well attended
The Museums Association today held its first advocacy training workshop at the Castle Museum in Norwich.
It saw 20 people, including museum directors, marketing personnel and others, discussing advocacy and looking at case studies around topical issues.
One case study looked at the best way of building up public support for museums going into a buildings review.
Stacey Arnold, the MA’s advocacy associate, said: “Some very good ideas came out, such as positioning museums to contribute to tourism, celebrating diversity, building up the commercial arm of the museum, and promoting the instrinsic value of the museum.”
Maurice Davies, the MA’s head of policy and communications, said: “The day went well. Our main aim is to get people to understand the benefits of advocacy, and to gain confidence about doing it. I think we achieved that today.”
The …Love Museums Advocacy Workshops will continue around the country, with two more this month in Exeter and London, and a number next month in Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, Glasgow and Newcastle. In May the workshops will go to Cardiff, Leeds and Woking.
