This year’s MA conference is not to be missed
With a week to go until this year’s Museums Association (MA) Conference & Exhibition in Manchester, there's still time to book your place at Europe’s largest event for museums and galleries.

Taking place from 16-18 November, this year’s conference features two days of inspirational keynotes and dynamic sessions, three social events at different museums and a day of site visits.

Addressing three key themes – audiences, collections and workforce – the content delivered during conference will explore everything from flexible working, working with refugees and controversial objects, to post-digital museums, “fake news”, and diversity in museums.

Keynotes from the poet Lemn Sissay and comedian Francesca Martinez take place on Thursday, with historian and broadcaster David Olusoga, and Alejandra Naftal, the director and co-curator of the Esma Memory Site Museum, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will speak on Friday.

Alongside the main sessions there’s an extensive range of fringe events and activities, including Festival of Change, a series of creative interventions from participants in the MA’s Transformers programme, which supports radical change in museums. Museums Change Lives training will also will help your organisation have real impact on the communities you serve.

MA members will have a chance to attend the MA’s AGM, which will be held on Thursday 16 November at 2pm in the Exchange Auditorium.

There’ll be no shortage of opportunities to network with colleagues, key museum stakeholders and funders, over networking breakfasts, hosted lunches and three social events – a welcome reception at the Whitworth on Wednesday evening, a conference party at the Museums of Science and Industry on Thursday, and a closing drinks event at the People’s History Museum on Friday night.

On Saturday, delegates are invited to take part in a number of site visits and tours to venues across Manchester, including the National Football Museum, the Greater Manchester Transport Museum and the Chinese Centre for Contemporary Art.

Running alongside the conference on 16-17 November, this year’s exhibition is an ideal chance to meet more than 80 of the sector’s leading suppliers, see the latest products on the market and take advantage of special offers and on-stand demos.

There is also a free programme of Museum Practice and Careers Hub workshops, which are open to conference delegates and non-paying exhibition visitors.

The MA Conference & Exhibition 2017 takes place at the Manchester Central Convention Complex on 16-17 November. To avoid queues on the day, book online for conference or register to attend the exhibition.
