Museum Strategy Group begins consultation with sector
Scotland has moved a step closer towards a national strategy for museums and galleries with the establishment of a Museum Strategy Group made up of representatives from across the sector.
The group, which held its first meeting earlier this week, has been tasked by the Scottish government with supporting and steering the development of the strategy.
Its next step will be to consult with the sector, focusing on where museums and galleries should be in the next 10 years, and what they can do for people.
The consultation is to look at how the sector can make the best use of available skills and resources; how it can meet its long term ambitions; and the impact and role of museums in society.
Engagement with the sector has already commenced, and a public consultation will be launched at Museums Galleries Scotland’s (MGS) Collaborating to Compete conference on 16 September.
There will be a range of ways to participate in the consultation, including online surveys, group events and one-to-one meetings.
The national strategy will inform the business plan and governance structure of the National Development Body for Scotland’s Museums. The necessary transitional arrangements are underway for MGS to become the National Development Body.
Fiona Ballantyne, chair of the Museum Strategy Group, said: “The development of the strategy comes at a time when we have great changes affecting all parts of society.
"It makes sense that the sector works together to explore how we can move in a new, more sustainable direction and consultations with the sector this summer and autumn will tap into this way of thinking.”
Fiona Hyslop, culture secretary for Scotland, said: “I welcome the formation of the Museum Strategy Group. This is another step towards building greater cohesion and stronger partnerships across the museums sector.”

We said that the Museum Strategy Group would be responsible for making transitional arrangements as MGS moves to become the National Development Body for the sector. This is not in fact correct, as their work is purely on national strategy development.
