MA seeks feedback on first draft of UK loan principles
As part of its flagship Effective Collections programme, the MA is reviewing the key principles of UK loans.
The consultation, expected to last approximately 18 months, will be a collaborative project using source documents, such as the MA’s Code of Ethics, as a springboard towards developing more specific guidance on UK loan practice.
At this opening stage, the MA is inviting individuals, museums and other groups within the museum sector to offer feedback on the initial draft of key UK loan principles, published today.
The provisional principles were compiled with support from the MA Ethics Committee and the Collections Strategy Group (CSG), and will be refined and expanded in the course of the review.
Diane Gwilt, keeper of collections at Cardiff’s Collections Centre and member of the CSG, said: “The key principles of loans cited in this document provide an excellent framework for an intelligent and considered review of loan practices at a time of increasing concern over social, economic and environmental sustainability of museums.”
The consultation panel is also seeking volunteers to take part in a small working group tasked with analysing what the principles mean for loans practice in the UK.
MA collections coordinator Sally Cross, who is overseeing the review, said: “We are trying to do the review in a very collaborative way. These principles will show how you can be a good lender or borrower – outlining, for example, when it’s ok to refuse a loan.”
The deadline for feedback is 17th September 2010.
